| What makes the St. Lucie Estuary and Indian River Lagoon areas of the Treasure Coast of Florida such a productive year round fishing location?
The Indian River is actually part of the intra-coastal waterway that runs from Florida to Maine. Located between Palm Beach to the south and Ft. Pierce to the north, the Indian River Lagoon, St Lucie Estuary and surrounding waters of Florida's Treasure Coast are synonymous with big sea trout, giant snook, schools of tailing redfish, tarpon, shark, goliath grouper and a myriad of other species. The fishing region of Jupiter, Stuart and Ft Pierce is such a great place to fish because
we have so many options here. We can fish year round in relatively good weather, and there is always a hot species, such as trout, redfish or snook to fish.
Moreover when you tire of trout, you can fish for snook, redfish, tarpon, snapper, spanish mackerel and a host of other species. The principal habitat used by redfish and trout in this area are the vast expanse of grass flats that cover the shallows of the Indian River Lagoon. These grass flats provide the perfect habitat for sea trout, redfish and snook. These grasses provide food for young fish, shrimp, crabs, and other invertebrates that gamefish feed on. The principle species that redfish and trout feed on are shrimp and mullet. You may get burned-out if you fish for spotted seatrout all 12 months. However, here when you get tired of trout, you can catch snook, tarpon, redfish, flounder, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel and many other kinds of fish. With over 20 years experience fishing the Treasure Coast of Ft. Pierce, Stuart, Sebastian and Jupiter, including the beautiful clear shallow waters of the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River are home to some of the largest snook, spotted trout, redfish and tarpon the state has to offer. Whether you are looking to stalk snook, redfish and trout on the flats, chase tarpon and permit on the beach or even chase offshore gamefish on fly, Capt. Ed. Zyak can make it happen.Capt. Ed is known as a trout master, regularly weighing and releasing seatrout over 10 pounds at virtually any time of the year. That said, he knows where to find snook and redfish, too. That's easy because they tend to hang out in the same areas as the trout that the St. Lucie Estuary is so well known for.
"I target all three species in the same zone, fishing for snook, trout and redfish in same water, in the same grass flats." says Capt. Ed. "It varies based on the time of year. But, in the spring and the fall, you can target all three species in the same zone. Where you're catching snook and trout, you're catching redfish." We are lucky in that, during the winter when every type of fish heads for different types of water and cover, his three Slam species tend to stay in the same area. "When we're looking for trout and redfish, we'll do more fishing in areas with sunny shorelines, as those fish seek out the warmth," Zyak said. "That time of year, the snook will be looking for deeper water." There are areas of the North Fork and South Fork of the St. Lucie River where 2 to 3 foot deep grass flats give way to 20 and 30 foot holes. The trout and redfish will be on top of the flats, seeking warmth, while the snook will be in the deeper holes, using the thick layer of water as insulation |
